If you have submitted an application for international protection in Belgium, you have the right to open a bank account using your orange card. However, in practical terms, it is a bit complicated because there are not many banks in Belgium giving this service with orange cards.
Generally, you may open two types of standard and basic bank accounts in Belgium.
Standard bank account: With this type of bank account, you are able to deposit and withdraw money, also electronic payments and internet purchase. ING bank is currently opening this bank account with an orange card with a charge of €40 in a year. You need to pay that in advance immediately once you start using your bank account. Argenta bank also in some branches is offering a suitable service of the bank account for orange card holders.
Basic bank account: Belfius is the only bank offering this service for refugees holding orange cards. All nationalities are normally welcomed to open this basic bank account. You may use it to withdraw and deposit cash and electronic payment but you cannot use it for internet purchasing. Belfius (formerly called Dexia) is opening this basic bank account using an orange card with no nationality consideration. For instance, you may go to Belfius Bank in Halle with your orang card and Annex 26 to open a bank account. The bank card will be sent by post to you normally in 5 days. It will cost you about €2.5 per month to receive this service. You will receive a card reader machine in a week by post. Also, you need to activate your card in the bank at the first use.
Important: Before opening a bank account, inform them about your country of origin
Go to the bank websites or call them to make an appointment.
